What Insurance Do I Need for Skiing, Snowboarding and Winter Sports Trips?

BACK

Published: 06/01/2025

Winter sports trips can be exhilarating, but they also come with unique risks. Whether you’re planning to enjoy some skiing, snowboarding, ice-skating or tobogganing, it’s important to make sure you have the right insurance cover in place.

Standard travel insurance often excludes cover for winter sports, so make sure you choose a policy specifically tailored to skiing, snowboarding or whatever particular activities you’re planning on enjoying.

To make sure you’re properly covered, simply chat with one of our friendly team at Prizm Solutions. We’ll just need to know where in the world you’re going and for how long, plus more details about the activities you’ll be undertaking and a few other facts, so we can chat about how much cover you may need and provide you with a quote.

People travelling with an adverse medical history can still get cover too, subject to full medical underwriting in certain cases. Always be sure to disclose all medical conditions when you buy the policy to stop any problems if/when a claim occurs.

A Winter Sports Policy should include coverage for:

Medical Expenses to cover any injuries sustained on the slopes.

Emergency Evacuation to provide for airlifts or other urgent transport in case of accident or natural disaster such as an avalanche.

Trip Cancellations and Interruptions in case travel arrangements don’t go to plan.

Equipment Insurance, in case any of your own skis and snowboards, or any rented equipment gets lost, stolen or damaged.

Piste Closure and Bad Weather Coverage, as some policies will reimburse some costs for unused passes or lessons, or cover transport to a higher-altitude resort if weather conditions make it impossible to partake in planned activities.

Personal Liability in case of an accident, to provide you with cover to protect you from any financial liability.

Depending on the level of winter sports you enjoy, you may want to also consider including Off-Piste Coverage if you’re planning to venture off the marked trails.

And whilst you don’t want to taint the excitement of your upcoming holiday thinking about potential accidents, it might be worth looking at taking out a Personal Accident Insurance policy too, especially if you’re self-employed and your income depends on your ability to work.

Speak to Prizm Solutions today, so you can hit the slopes knowing you’re protected against unforeseen events, and the only thing you need to worry about is which slope to tackle first!
